Leather Pouch Reminiscent of A Plump Flower Bud

Story

The drawstring has been replaced with kumihimo, a traditional Japanese braided cord long used for obi ties and decorative accessories. By intricately intertwining multiple strands of thread, kumihimo is both supple and strong.

Dyed in a rich Deep Indigo, the pouch is accented with a shell button. The shell button's elegant luster beautifully enhances the color’s depth.

This drawstring pouch is made from high-quality “white-tanned leather,” reflecting the long-standing traditions of Hyogo, a region blessed with abundant water resources, and the skilled tanning techniques of artisans.

Leather is made from hides through a process called tanning, which transforms them into a durable material suitable for use. The “white-tanned leather” used for Cohana’s drawstring pouch is made without chemical agents, using vegetable tannins and other natural materials, making it gentle on people and the environment. Carefully tanned using this method, the leather has a fine texture and a beautiful white appearance, allowing it to take color beautifully when dyed.

The leather may feel slightly firm at first, but it gradually becomes more supple and comfortable to the touch with use.

Founded in 1955, Yoshikawa Leather Studio is a tannery that began by producing white leather for volleyballs. A tanner is a specialist who processes hides into leather for use as a material. With a commitment to making leather they can be proud of, Yoshikawa Leather Studio produces leather known for its beautiful finish and its ability to take color beautifully when dyed. 

Kumihimo | Matsushima Kumihimo / Mie

Founded in 1932 in Iga, Mie Prefecture, Matsushima Kumihimo has been making braided cords for four generations while preserving the traditions of the craft. The owner, Mr. Shunsaku Matsushima, draws on his wisdom and experience as a traditional craftsman, with a particular focus on creating braided cords with a beautiful texture and character. He continues to seek the luster of silk threads and the beauty of tradition.

Handling Precautions

• White-tanned leather is a natural material and may have uneven coloring. These variations are part of its natural character.
• Each shell button has its own characteristic curve, and variations may occur in shape, color, thickness, and texture.
• Loose fibers on the inside of the pouch and on the backside of the leather may come off due to friction.
• Contact with water or perspiration may cause color fading or staining.
• Color may fade due to friction.
• To prevent discoloration from direct sunlight and deformation or mold caused by high humidity and heat, store in a well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight.
• If you are concerned about dirt or stains, use a leather cleaner. Avoid rubbing too hard, as this may cause the color to fade.
• Dropping the pouch or subjecting it to strong impact may cause the shell button to crack or parts to come off.
