[Pre-orders open September 16 ] Blue: Adding Beauty to Everyday Life, Bringing a Quiet Sense of Calm

“Japan blue” has long been deeply woven into everyday life in Japan, appearing in everything from kimono and noren curtains to daily tools and objects, and even places of prayer.
More than simply a color used for practical goods, blue has been cherished throughout history as an important part of daily life, bringing a sense of freshness and calm while helping us feel centered and composed.

The term “Japan Blue” was coined by Robert William Atkinson, a British chemist who visited Japan during the Meiji era. He was struck by the streets lined with indigo-dyed kimono and noren curtains, and named the rich blue he encountered “Japan Blue.”

“Japan Blue, Blue in Materials” is a series that brings together the craftsmanship of artisans from across Japan with the beauty of their materials, inviting you to discover the depth and strength of blue, a color that continues to be cherished through the seasons.
