A Flower Motif Awaji Kawara Needle Rest with a Built-in Needle Polisher
Story
Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture, blessed with rich soil, is one of Japan’s leading Kawara (traditional Japanese roof tile) production areas. This flower motif Awaji Kawara Magnetic Needle Rest with Needle Polisher is crafted using Awaji’s natural clay and the skilled techniques of the artisans at Irakato.
The origin of Awaji Kawara dates back to 1610. The first Kawara roof tiles were made for Japanese castles and later developed during the construction boom of the Edo period. There are several types of Awaji Kawara depending on the production method, and this item is made from glazed ceramic roof tiles. Variations in glaze create unique expressions, making each piece one of a kind and adding charm to your handicraft time.
A built-in magnet allows this item to function as a needle rest, keeping sewing needles safely in place during use. This item also includes a built-in needle polisher, which helps your needles glide through fabric more smoothly. It gently reduces small inconveniences in needlework, helping you enjoy a more comfortable and pleasant sewing experience.
How to use the needle polisher
-
Slowly insert the needle from the tip into the side hole, then pull it out. Be careful not to damage the needle tip.
-
For stronger polishing, insert the needle into the hole, then move it back and forth while pushing up the logo on the bottom. Rotate the needle as needed. Repeat several times for a smoother finish.
*After use, a small amount of abrasive residue may remain on the needle. Please wipe it off with a soft cloth before use.
Each glazed ceramic Kawara develops its own unique character during firing.
