A Soft, Pearl-like Iridescent Glow

Story

The flower-shaped shell buttons are made from Akoya pearl oyster shells. Their natural, pearl-like iridescent glow is beautifully preserved, giving the buttons a delicate, luminous appearance.

There are three different cut patterns, each featuring gentle curves reminiscent of lines drawn by hand. Combined with the natural curves of the original shells, these subtle variations give each shell button its own unique character.

These pushpins are designed so that the needle does not get fully embedded in the wall. Thinner yet stronger than standard pushpins and thumbtacks, the pins keep the shell button 4 mm away from the wall surface. When used on a wall, the flower-shaped shell button casts a soft floral shadow, creating a subtle yet striking presence. They are also easy to remove without damaging your fingernails.

The subdued gold tone of the brass-plated finish adds a subtle accent to the natural glow of the Akoya oyster shells.

Flower Push Pin (Mother-of-Pearl) is a three-piece single-color set.

Producing Regions

Nara, Hiroshima

Producers

Shell buttons | TOMOI / Nara

Kawanishi Town in Nara Prefecture is Japan’s largest production area for shell buttons, despite being an inland town. The six rivers that flow through the town once provided a waterway for transporting goods from Osaka, and shell button making became an important occupation during the agricultural off-season, passed down through generations.
Tomoi was founded here in 1913. Drawing on their delicate craftsmanship and years of experience, they continue to meet the diverse and technically demanding orders from the fashion industry.

Pins | Meikodo Co., Ltd. / Aki District, Hiroshima

Meikodo produces needles that glide smoothly through fabric, as well as specialty pins.
The tips of their needles are carefully polished using techniques refined by skilled craftspeople over many years.

Handling Precautions

  • The needle tip is sharp. Take care when handling the product and avoid losing it.
  • Using the pin on hard materials or applying excessive pressure may cause the shell  button to crack, the needle to break, or parts to come loose.
  • The needle has a brass-plated finish and may discolor depending on how it  is used or over time.
  • The shell buttons are made from natural Akoya shells. Due to the natural curves of  the shells, each piece may vary in shape, color, thickness, and texture.
  • Keep out of reach of infants and young children.
