The Quiet Elegance of a Brass Spool Wound with Silk Thread

Story

The history of Japanese thread spools dates back centuries. Among the various types is the odamaki, a traditional spool featuring four upright posts held in place by a cross-shaped brace, around which spun thread is wound. It has long been a familiar tool in Japan, traditionally used in weaving.

This classic form has been recreated as a miniature brass spool measuring just 3.3 cm. Its intricate construction, featuring 5 mm square brass rods, is a testament to the skill of the artisans who make it. Cast and polished by Takatsuji Seisakujo in Takaoka City, Toyama, a city renowned for its metal casting, the spool has a refined luster and a dignified presence.

The silk thread is then carefully hand-wound by artisans at Tassel Studio MARIMO in Fukuoka. Their meticulous handiwork, with attention to every detail, gives the spool its beautiful finish.

A small notch allows you to tuck in the end of the thread, making it easy to replace the silk thread with a thread of your choice.

In addition to its use as a thread spool, it can serve as a pen rest.

It also makes a lovely display stand for small creations, such as the temari balls shown here.

Combining the form of a traditional tool with the delicate handiwork of skilled artisans, this is a small piece with a distinctive presence.
