Perfect for Your Summer Travel. Nihonbashi 9th Anniversary Butterfly Collection

In June 2026, the Cohana Nihonbashi store, our only directly managed store, celebrated its 9th anniversary, thanks to your wonderful support.

To express our heartfelt gratitude, we introduced a limited anniversary collection adorned with an exclusive butterfly motif, symbolizing our wish that the bond we share with you will continue to flourish.
We hope you've already had a chance to explore the collection.

In Japan, the number nine holds a time-honored significance. As the largest single-digit number, it has long been associated with ultimate excellence and the hope that good things will last for years to come, making it an especially auspicious number.
Today, we'd like to take a closer look at the story and craftsmanship behind these special anniversary items.

Small Enough to Go Wherever You Go
9th Anniversary Seki Mini Scissors Butterfly

Made in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture—Japan's renowned center of cutlery craftsmanship—the Seki Mini Scissors combine exceptional performance with timeless beauty. Featuring Cohana's signature silk tassel and premium leather sheath, this 9th Anniversary edition is adorned with a delicate white butterfly charm.

Small enough to rest in the palm of your hand, these scissors offer remarkably smooth handling and authentic cutting performance. Rather than relying on pointed tips, they cut through the precise alignment of the two blades, making the craftsmanship behind their exceptional sharpness all the more remarkable.

Without finger loops, they can be held comfortably in either hand. Designed to snip threads effortlessly with just a light pinch of your fingertips, they are easy to use even for those with a weaker grip, allowing for smooth, comfortable cutting without strain.

Compact enough to take wherever you go, the Seki Mini Scissors are small enough to fit in your carry-on luggage. Whether you're enjoying a little sewing or knitting during a long journey by train or plane, or simply need to trim a loose thread while you're away, they're a practical companion to keep tucked inside your pouch. We hope you'll take them along on your summer adventures, together with their graceful butterfly charm.
Please note that carry-on regulations may vary by airline. We recommend checking with your airline before traveling.

Where Craftsmanship Blooms in 5 mm
9th Anniversary Tombo-dama Sewing Pins Butterfly

The Tombo-dama Sewing Pins are topped with charming glass beads, each handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kinari Glass in Osaka.

The name tombo-dama (dragonfly bead) is widely believed to have originated from the tiny round floral patterns inside the glass, which resemble the compound eyes of a dragonfly.

The craft is said to have been introduced to Japan during the Nara period. Traditional techniques for making tombo-dama, along with written records of the process and the raw materials used, have been preserved in the Shōsō-in Repository in Nara.

To create the intricate patterns inside each tiny glass bead measuring just 5 mm in diameter, the artisans use millefiori, an Italian glass material whose name means "a thousand flowers."

Millefiori is made by melting colored glass rods, shaping them into canes, allowing them to cool, and then slicing them into sections. These sections are carefully combined to form a single larger cane whose cross-section reveals flowers or butterflies. The cane is then reheated until fused, stretched into a long rod, and sliced again to produce beautiful millefiori with floral and butterfly patterns.

Working over the flame of a burner, the artisans carefully melt each glass bead onto a strong yet flexible needle made in Hiroshima, each one by hand. They work at the closest possible distance to the flame while avoiding burns, requiring exceptional concentration and skill. Even a little too much heat can blur the delicate floral patterns, making every pin a testament to the artisan's remarkable precision.

The 9th Anniversary limited set includes three classic floral tombo-dama pins, each showcasing the artisans’ delicate craftsmanship, along with one specially created yellow butterfly tombo-dama pin. Together, they create a charming scene on your pincushion, as if a butterfly is gracefully fluttering among the flowers.
