For Cohana's products, we use simple color names Yellow, Pink, Green, Blue and Gray. But actually each color has Japanese traditional color names.
Today we feature Green; a story about MIZUASAGI from one of the Cohana's five basic colors and recommended products in MIZUASAGI color.
MIZUASAGI is Green with a pale light blue tinge. It is a refreshing green reminiscent of clear water in the mountains.
Mizuasagi is one of the color names for Japanese Indigo dye.
In Japan, the traditional indigo dyeing is done by putting indigo solution made by fermenting indigo leaves into a large jar, soaking threads or cloth in the solution. By soaking them repeatedly until they reach the desired color.
There is a saying 「藍色四十八色:Aiiro Shijuhachi Shoku」which means there are 48 colors of Indigo blue. This is an expression that Japanese indigo has many different colors. It starts from a pale light blue at the beginning and gets darker and darker to a navy blue, and the deepest Indigo blue is almost black.

Shiraai is name of the lightest, almost white, light blue color. It serves as a starting point in the gradation of blue hues derived from indigo dyeing traditions.
Kamenozoki follows Shiraai and is characterized as a pale blue with a slight overlay of indigo dye. The name comes from the Japanese words "kame" (jar) and "nozoki" (peeking), signifying the delicate color seen when peering into a jar containing diluted indigo dye. This subtle tint is emblematic of the refined sensibility found in Japanese color naming and aesthetics.
The Mizuasagi is the next color, green with a tint of light blue. Mizuasagi blends the freshness of green with the clarity of light blue.
These hues, including the cohana's color Mizuasagi, reveal the Japanese appreciation for subtle gradations and the rich cultural sensibility embedded in traditional color names and practices.
