The Story Behind Our Brand Name

When launching the brand, we looked into Japanese mythology "Kojiki" for ideas for the brand name, as the theme of the brand is "Japanese tradition and craftsmanship".
We took the sound "Cohana" from "Konohana", a part of the name of the deity : Konohana Sakuya-hime.

The word "Konohana" refers to "cherry blossoms" in old Japanese and the word SAKURA (cherry blossoms) is said to have originated from this deity.
The legend has it that she spread cherry blossom trees throughout Japan by sprinkling cherry petals from the top of Mt. Fuji.

Konohana Sakuya-hime : Deity of Bloosoms, Life and Fire

Konohana Sakuya-hime is the daughter of Oyamatsumikami, the head deity of all the mountain gods.
She is the most beautiful deity of all. Her beauty is so exquisite that she is praised as symbolizing the beauty of blooming flowers.
She is the mother goddess who married Niniginomikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu (The goddess of the sun), and gave birth to the descendant of Amaterasu.

In mythology, she is described as not only beautiful, but also as an honorable deity who overcomes the difficulties that she encounters because of her exquisite beauty with powerful self-expression.
Based on an anecdote of giving birth in a fire and a legend of suppressing the eruption of an active volcano, Mt.Fuji, she is worshipped as the goddess of fire at Asama shrines throughout Japan.

Before the brand launch, we took our first Cohana 8 products made with artisans to Mt. Fuji Hongu Asama Grand Shrine in Shizuoka prefecture, which is the head shrine of all the Asama Shrines in Japan where Princess Konohanasakuyahime is enshrined, and had a formal prayer.

Throughout the ages, we Japanese have found prosperity and joy in the beauty of cherry blossoms blooming in spring, symbolized by the deity : Konohana Sakuya-hime.
Our hope is that through our products with the beauty of Japan, Cohana will deliver prosperity and joy to the artisans who work with us and to the customers who use our products!
