Nambu ironware, basic items rooted in daily life
Nambu ironware is a metal craft made in the areas of Morioka City and Mizusawa City, Iwate Prefecture. This traditional craft was born in the 17th Century and was named "Nambu ironware" after the Nambu domain in Iwate.
It developed along with the popularity of the tea ceremony and later spread as daily use of basic items in the kitchens of Japanese people.
Nambu ironware has always been a part of Japanese daily life, but during the Second World War it was forced to stop production.
As military demand increased, iron was used to make artillery shells and fighter jet parts.
Even during this unfortunate period when the production was halted, craftsmen continued to preserve the traditional techniques of Nambu ironware, and after the war, Nambu ironware made a comeback as daily necessities.
In 1975, Nambu ironware was certified as the first Japanese traditional craft by the Japanese government.
It is said that "If you take care of it in the right way, Nambu ironware can last 3 generations." Nambu ironware has been loved by many Japanese people for its durability and longevity.
Recently, many colorful and modern Nambu ironware have been produced, and their popularity is increasing overseas as well.
